How we compare Instagram DM automation tools

Updated:

Every fact on DM Compared comes from a vendor’s own website or from Meta’s documentation, read on a stated date. We compare 27 Instagram DM and comment automation tools on the same questions and price each one for 1,000 and 10,000 contacts a month.

Which tools we cover

We cover 27 tools that come up when businesses in the US and Latin America look for Instagram DM automation. They range from ManyChat and SendPulse to small comment-to-DM apps, and include Meta Business Suite, which is free and built into Instagram. The directory lists all of them.

Where the facts come from

For each tool we read its pricing page and its help center, plus any feature pages. For the rules every tool works within, we read Meta’s developer documentation. Every number and every Yes on the site traces back to one of those pages and the date we read it.

We do not copy figures from other review sites. We also ignore review scores that vendors publish about themselves.

What counts as Yes

A feature gets a green check only when the vendor’s own pages confirm it. If no page says so, the site shows No, even when the tool may well have the feature. Every Yes can be proven this way. It also means a few of the Nos are features a vendor has not documented, and we change them as soon as a page confirms them.

A feature that costs extra is marked as an add-on.

How we price each tool

Vendors price in different ways. Some count all contacts and some count only active ones. Others count DMs sent or charge per team seat. To make them comparable, we price two cases: an account with about 1,000 Instagram contacts a month and one with about 10,000.

For each case we take the cheapest plan that includes Instagram comment-to-DM, billed monthly. Where a tool charges per DM, we assume about one DM per contact. A plan with no public price shows as quote only.

Prices are in US dollars, rounded to whole dollars. Local prices are converted at the exchange rate on the day we checked them.

The cost calculator applies the same pricing rules to any number of contacts. Each time the site is built, a check confirms that the calculator, the tables and the charts give the same figures for every tool.

Meta status

According to their own pages, all 27 tools use Meta’s official API. We list a tool as a Meta Business Partner only when the vendor says so. A Meta Tech Provider badge is a different designation, so we do not count it as partner status. The explainer on Meta-approved automation covers the difference.

Ratings

Star ratings are Trustpilot scores, rounded to the nearest half star, as we read them on the check date. They are the only stars on the site. We do not give tools star scores of our own.

How we rank

Our main rankings are written for small businesses that sell through Instagram DMs. We weigh these points:

  • whether the plan includes comment-to-DM
  • the monthly price at 1,000 and 10,000 contacts
  • whether a CRM and payment buttons in the chat are built in
  • whether a free plan lets you start before paying

The order is our judgement on those points, not a score formula. SendPulse ranks first because no other tool here offers a built-in CRM and payment buttons in the chat for less. Chatfuel ranks second because its comment-to-DM feature is free, with no stated contact limit.

Pages that answer a narrower question use their own order. The cheapest tools page puts price first, and the AI agents page puts AI replies first.

Corrections

If a fact is wrong or out of date, email zhe@dmcompared.com (opens in a new tab) with a link to the page that shows the right information. We fix confirmed errors and update the date on the page.

Vendors can send corrections the same way. We change a fact only when a public page confirms it.

How the site makes money is explained on the disclosure page.
