The best Instagram DM and comment automation tools for small businesses in 2026

Updated:

For most small businesses, SendPulse is the best value for automating Instagram comments and DMs. It costs $22 a month for 1,000 contacts and $74 for 10,000, and that price already includes a CRM and payment buttons in the chat. ManyChat documents more Instagram triggers than any other tool here. The same two audiences cost $39 and $162 on ManyChat. If that price is the problem, our ManyChat alternatives compare eight cheaper and free options.

If all you need is a DM sent to everyone who comments a keyword, you may not need to pay at all. Chatfuel’s free plan does it with no stated contact limit, and Meta Business Suite has a basic version built in.

The nine tools below are the ones small businesses most often weigh up when they choose an Instagram automation tool. Smaller single-purpose apps such as InstantDM and LinkDM are compared on a separate page.

1. SendPulse

1K contacts
$22 a month
10K contacts
$74 a month
Free plan
Yes
Billing
Per contact

No tool here offers a built-in CRM and payment buttons in the chat for less than SendPulse. There is no 1,000-contact tier, so an account that size pays for the 2,000 tier at $22. The free plan already includes Instagram for up to 500 subscribers. That is enough to run a first giveaway before paying anything.

Creators should check one gap. The help center documents story mentions and live comments, but it does not describe a trigger for replies to your own stories or a follow-to-DM trigger.

Where it is strong

  • Free plan includes Instagram with 3 bots, 500 subscribers and 10,000 messages a month, and the vendor's own comparison page lists Instagram among free-plan channels.
  • Pro pricing scales by subscriber list in low steps: $12 (500), $22 (2,000), $48 (5,000), $74 (10,000) per month on monthly billing, with 20% off yearly.
  • In-chat payments on paid plans through 13 payment providers, including Stripe, PayPal and Mercado Pago, with payment completed on the provider's page, plus a free built-in CRM (5 team members).
  • Documented Instagram triggers for post comments, live-stream comments and story mentions. An MCP server and public API are available.

Where it falls short

  • No 1,000-subscriber Pro tier: a 1,000-contact account pays for the 2,000 tier ($22/mo).
  • Free plan excludes in-chat payments, teamwork tools, branding removal and full API. Limited to 10 variables and 10 triggers.
  • A story-reply (reply to your story) trigger and a follow-to-DM trigger are not documented in the Instagram knowledge base. Only story mentions and a follower check are.
  • Billing is by total subscribers stored, so inactive subscribers still count toward the tier.

Skip it if you want billing based only on monthly-active contacts rather than total subscriber list size. Or if you need a documented story-reply or follow-event trigger on Instagram. Or if you need a chatbot-only vendor. SendPulse is a wider marketing suite, with email, SMS, courses and landing pages in the same account as the chatbots.

2. Chatfuel

Chatfuel is the answer if you only want comment-to-DM and want it free. Its Instagram comment autoreply page says the feature costs nothing, with no limit on contacts or messages. The full platform with AI replies and a team inbox is $20 a month.

Selling in the chat is the weak spot. Chatfuel’s help center says payment processors such as Stripe and PayPal cannot be connected, although one line in its pricing FAQ suggests otherwise.

Where it is strong

  • Instagram comment autoreply with keyword rules (up to 30 custom rules per source, 50 keywords per rule), public and/or private replies, post lists and ad comments is available on the free tier with no stated contact cap.
  • Flat subscription with unlimited contacts and teammates: Business is $20/mo monthly or $18/mo yearly, so cost does not rise with 1k vs 10k contacts.
  • Vendor-stated Official Meta Partner and WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, with a GraphQL public API and Zapier integration.
  • Help center explicitly documents Meta constraints (no follow-event DM, Instagram messaging limits), which reduces surprises.

Where it falls short

  • No in-chat payment gateway: the help center states Stripe, PayPal or other processors cannot be connected. Payment is handled via AI receipt verification, contradicting the pricing-page FAQ that mentions Stripe.
  • AI replies are metered through a credit wallet with fair-use limits. The bot pauses when the allowance is exhausted until renewal, top-up or a customer-supplied OpenAI key.
  • Business plan includes only 1 bot. Multiple brands need an Agency tier ($90-$100/mo and up), and tier naming differs between the pricing page and help center.
  • Follow-to-DM is not available (Meta does not expose a follower event). Trustpilot shows 3.2 from 14 reviews.

Skip it if you need native checkout or payment buttons inside Instagram DMs. Or if you want a follow-to-DM welcome automation. Or if you run several brands or client accounts and want them on a single low-cost plan (Business is limited to 1 bot).

3. ManyChat

1K contacts
$39 a month
10K contacts
$162 a month
Free plan
Yes
Billing
Plan plus usage

ManyChat is the reference point for this category. Its help center documents every Instagram entry point we checked, from story replies and live comments to a follow-to-DM beta that Meta still gates by account.

It bills by monthly active contacts, so followers who never message you cost nothing. The jump between plans is steep, though. An account with 1,000 active contacts lands on Pro at $39, and 10,000 means Business plus overage at $162 a month. Its Trustpilot score was 2.1 from 305 reviews on 6 October 2026.

Where it is strong

  • Covers every Instagram entry point documented in its help center: post/reel comments with keyword filters and rotating public replies, story replies, story mentions, live comments, DM keywords and the Meta-gated follow-to-DM beta.
  • Free plan includes Instagram and comment-to-DM automation at $0 (25 Active Contacts, 4 live automations), and Essential/Pro have 14-day trials.
  • Billing is by Active Contacts (people who interact in the month), so dormant followers do not add cost. Overage is automatic rather than cutting automations off.
  • Vendor-stated Meta Business Partner with help-center guidance on staying within Meta policies.

Where it falls short

  • Free plan is capped at 25 Active Contacts and 4 live automations with 'Powered by ManyChat' branding. A 1,000-contact Instagram account effectively needs Pro at $39/mo (Essential + overage costs more).
  • WhatsApp, SMS and Email channels, ManyChat AI, Broadcasts and API access start at Pro ($39/mo monthly). Multi-user Inbox starts at Business ($99/mo).
  • Inbox seats are limited per plan (1/1/2/3/5) and extra seats cost $25 each. Pricing page lists Broadcasts for WhatsApp, Telegram and Messenger, not Instagram.
  • Trustpilot score is 2.1 from 305 reviews, far below its 4.5 on G2 (165 reviews) and 4.6 on Capterra (72 reviews).

Skip it if you need a free tier for more than 25 engaged contacts per month. Or if you want a built-in CRM pipeline or native e-commerce checkout beyond a Stripe/PayPal Buy Button (max item price 100 USD). Or if you need a team inbox for several agents on a low budget (multi-user Inbox requires the $99/mo Business plan).

4. respond.io

1K contacts
$199 a month
10K contacts
$1,279 a month
Free plan
No
Billing
Plan plus usage

respond.io is built for teams that answer messages from many channels in one inbox, and Instagram is one of ten it connects. Automation starts on the Growth plan at $199 a month with 1,000 monthly active contacts included.

Each extra 100 contacts costs $12 on that plan, which takes 10,000 contacts to $1,279. That is the highest figure on this page. It makes sense for a support team that needs routing and reporting, not for a shop running giveaways.

Where it is strong

  • Instagram DMs, comments and ad inquiries land in a shared team inbox with assignment, routing and agent performance reports. Story interactions can be toggled on or off to avoid emoji-react noise.
  • Broad channel coverage on every plan (WhatsApp API, Messenger, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, Viber, LINE, SMS, email, custom channel) with CRM sync to HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho and Shopify.
  • AI Agents, Developer API, MCP, Zapier/n8n and llms.txt are available, and AI usage is bundled into Growth and above rather than metered separately.
  • Billing uses Monthly Active Contacts (people you actually talk to), with 24/7 support listed on all plans.

Where it falls short

  • No free plan. The entry Starter plan is $99/mo (monthly billing) and excludes Workflow automation, AI Agents, broadcasts and the Developer API.
  • Comment-to-DM automation effectively starts at Growth ($199/mo monthly) with 1,000 MACs. Extra MACs cost $12 per 100, so 10,000 MACs is about $1,279/mo at list rates.
  • Instagram-specific triggers (keywords, story mentions, live comments, follow events, public comment replies) are not itemised on the Instagram integration or pricing pages.
  • Trustpilot profile shows 2.5 from 17 reviews, against 4.8 on G2 (545 reviews) and 4.6 on Capterra (60 reviews).

Skip it if you are a solo creator who mainly wants cheap comment-to-DM automation. The qualifying plan starts at $199/mo. Or if you need Instagram-specific growth triggers such as follow-to-DM or story-mention automations documented out of the box. Or if you need native in-chat payments. None are documented on the pricing or Instagram pages.

5. Meta Business Suite

Meta’s own tools cost nothing and need no extra app, but they are basic. You can set up to five keyword replies, which must match exactly and go out after 15 minutes unless someone on your team answers first. The comment-to-message option is basic too: Meta’s own help pages disagree on whether it matches hashtags or plain words. Both are set up on desktop.

Start here if you can still read every message yourself. Move to a paid tool when you want follow-up messages or a sales flow.

Where it is strong

  • Costs nothing and needs no third-party data access: instant reply, away message, FAQs, hours/location/contact templates, custom keywords and comment-to-message all live inside Business Suite Inbox.
  • Instagram app itself provides saved replies with keyboard shortcuts, up to four FAQ buttons shown when someone opens a chat, and Hidden Words comment and message-request filtering (on by default for offensive comments).
  • Single inbox across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp with assignment, labels, notes, spam/done folders and an 'identify unanswered messages' automation.

Where it falls short

  • Custom keyword automations are limited to 5 keywords or phrases, are case-sensitive exact matches, and only fire after 15 minutes of inactivity. A template automation (e.g. away message) overrides a keyword automation when both match.
  • Native 'Comment to message' is basic and available only on Meta Business Suite desktop. Meta's help pages disagree on whether it matches hashtags or plain keywords.
  • No multi-step flow builder, no contact tagging/segmentation for re-engagement, and no documented story-reply, story-mention, live-comment or follow triggers.
  • Instagram chat FAQs are capped at four questions. Saved replies are manual shortcuts, not automations.

Skip it if you need reliable keyword comment-to-DM with immediate delivery, link buttons and follow-up sequences. Or if you want to collect emails or tag contacts from Instagram conversations and message them later. Or if you need more than five keyword rules or case-insensitive matching.

6. HighLevel

1K contacts
$97 a month
10K contacts
$97 a month
Free plan
No
Billing
Flat price

HighLevel is an agency platform, and Instagram automation is one part of its CRM and marketing suite. The Starter plan is $97 a month with unlimited contacts, so 1,000 and 10,000 contacts cost the same.

AI replies are billed on top, either per use or as a monthly add-on. For a single shop it is more software than the job needs. It fits agencies that already run client CRMs in HighLevel.

Where it is strong

  • Flat agency pricing with unlimited contacts and users: Instagram comment-to-DM automation is available from the $97/month Starter plan with no per-contact tax.
  • Comment automation is a full workflow: Instagram comment trigger with 'Contains Phrase' or 'Exact Match' keyword filters, public 'Reply In Comments' action, and an Instagram Interactive Messenger action with buttons, quick replies, attachments and branching.
  • Instagram conversations land in the same CRM as pipelines, calendars, payments and invoicing, email and SMS, so a DM lead can be tagged, moved through a pipeline or booked without another tool.
  • 14-day free trial on any tier and month-to-month billing with no long-term contract.

Where it falls short

  • Built for agencies: the sub-account model, SaaS Mode and rebilling features are the product's focus. Starter is capped at 3 sub-accounts and API access starts at the $297 plan.
  • AI replies cost extra: Conversation AI is pay-per-use at token cost or $50-$97/month per sub-account, on top of the platform subscription.
  • Instagram DMs can only be sent within 24 hours of the contact's last DM or as a reply to a recent comment (vendor doc), so there is no Instagram broadcast capability.
  • Usage-based wallet billing for SMS, phone numbers, email and some workflow premium features adds variable cost. WhatsApp is a $10/month per sub-account add-on.
  • Story reply, story mention, live comment and follow triggers are not documented in the fetched Instagram workflow articles.

Skip it if you are a solo creator who only wants a cheap Instagram DM tool and does not need a CRM, funnels or client sub-accounts. Or if you need Instagram-specific growth triggers (story replies, story mentions, live comments, follows) that are documented and supported. Or if you want predictable all-in pricing without managing a usage wallet for AI, SMS and email.

7. NapoleonCat

1K contacts
$139 a month
10K contacts
$249 a month
Free plan
No
Billing
Plan plus usage

NapoleonCat is a social media inbox first. Its auto-moderation can answer an Instagram comment in public or in a private message, but only on the Expert plan, which starts at $139 a month.

Prices follow inbox volume rather than contacts. An account with 10,000 contacts and busy comment threads lands around $249. The AI assistant suggests replies but never sends one on its own.

Where it is strong

  • Instagram Auto-moderation rules cover organic comments, ad comments, private messages and profile mentions, with triggers on keywords, auto-detected sentiment, spam/hate tags or user tags, and actions including 'Reply in a private message', reply as comment, hide and delete.
  • Pricing is by seats, profiles and inbox volume rather than contacts: the first Expert tier ($139/month) covers 2 users, 5 profiles and 10,000 inbox messages regardless of audience size.
  • One inbox and one rule engine span Facebook, Facebook Ads, Instagram, Instagram Ads, TikTok, TikTok Ads, LinkedIn and YouTube, with assignment to moderators, tagging and email alerts.
  • 14-day trial of the full Expert plan without a credit card. EU-based vendor with GDPR statements and a non-profit discount of up to 50%.

Where it falls short

  • Comment-to-DM and all other automation require the Expert plan ($139/month monthly, $119 annual). The Standard and Pro plans do not include Auto-moderation.
  • Automation is single-step rules (trigger, condition, action), with randomised reply variants but no documented multi-step conversation flows, buttons, quick replies or DM broadcasts.
  • Monthly Inbox capacity caps (10K messages at tier 1) can be topped up only three times before a higher tier is needed.
  • AI reply suggestions never post automatically and AI Assistant features are a paid add-on. The AI is for moderation and drafting, not an autonomous agent.
  • Instagram Creator accounts are not supported. A Business profile linked to a Facebook Page is required.

Skip it if you want a conversational DM flow builder with buttons, quick replies, lead capture fields or broadcasts. Or if you need an entry price under $100/month or a free plan that includes Instagram automation. Or if you run a Creator account and will not convert it to a Business profile linked to a Facebook Page.

8. Customers.ai (MobileMonkey)

Billing
Plan plus usage

Searches for MobileMonkey still end up here. The company renamed itself Customers.ai in March 2023 and now sells identity resolution and email deliverability tools for Shopify and Klaviyo stores.

Its Instagram product, InstaChamp, still has a page and a list price of $19 a month for 1,000 contacts. That page was last modified in March 2025 and is missing from the main product menu. We would not start a new setup on it.

Where it is strong

  • Low entry price for Instagram DM automation: InstaChamp Platinum lists at $19/month for 1,000 contacts, with a free Creator edition for 250 contacts.
  • Vendor states InstaChamp is built on the Meta Messenger API for Instagram and quotes a Messenger platform partnerships executive on the launch.
  • Trigger coverage on the InstaChamp page includes post comments, Story mentions, Story reactions and DM keywords, with 'conversation paths' for branching replies.
  • Collects phone numbers and emails inside DMs and includes an SMS marketing number on the Platinum plan.

Where it falls short

  • Instagram DM automation is no longer the company's core business: since the March 2023 rebrand from MobileMonkey, Customers.ai markets identity resolution and email deliverability for Klaviyo users, and InstaChamp is absent from the main product menu.
  • The InstaChamp page shows signs of low maintenance: linked blog posts date from 2021, signup buttons still go to app.mobilemonkey.com, and a 'THIS WEEK' promo price was shown on every visit.
  • Platinum caps at 1,000 contacts and 500 branding-free sends. Growth is billed at $10 per 500 contacts and $5 per 1,000 sends, reaching about $199/month at 10,000 contacts.
  • No AI reply agent, live-comment trigger, follow trigger or human-handoff workflow is documented for InstaChamp.

Skip it if you want a vendor whose core product and roadmap are Instagram automation. Or if you plan to exceed roughly 10,000 contacts, where per-500-contact add-ons make it more expensive than flat-priced alternatives. Or if you need AI-generated replies or a documented agent handoff workflow.

9. Sprout Social

1K contacts
Not offered
10K contacts

Free plan
No
Billing
Per seat

Sprout Social is here because people search for it next to the others. It does not do comment-to-DM. Its inbox rules can tag, hide or flag a message, and its bot builder only starts once someone opens a DM.

Plans are priced per seat on annual billing, and the automated inbox rules need the Advanced plan at $399 per seat a month. It is a tool for social media teams, not for DM automation.

Where it is strong

  • Vendor displays a Meta Business Partner badge and supports two Instagram connection methods, including a direct Instagram login that avoids the 3-month Facebook reauthorization.
  • Bot Builder supports Instagram DM chatbots with up to 4 Ice Breakers, text and image replies, unlimited layers, and handoff into the Smart Inbox where agents reply, create cases and tag.
  • Automated Rules on the Advanced plan can tag, complete, alert on or hide Instagram comments and messages using keywords, advanced keyword queries, sentiment, spam classification, language, follower count and verified status.
  • 30-day free trial without a credit card, longer than most competitors' 14 days.

Where it falls short

  • No comment-to-DM automation: the vendor's Automated Rules actions are limited to tagging, completing, alerts and hiding, and chatbots start only when a user opens a DM. No automatic public comment replies are documented either.
  • Per-seat pricing from $199 per seat/month (annual billing) for the first plan with an inbox. Automated Rules require the $399 per seat/month Advanced plan.
  • One active chatbot per profile. Instagram bots are limited to 4 Ice Breakers and the Bot Builder's Keyword Command is documented only for X and Facebook.
  • AI in the inbox assists humans (tone rewriting, summaries, intent tags) rather than replying autonomously. Trellis credits are capped at 100 per seat per month unless Trellis Plus is purchased.

Skip it if you want comment-to-DM lead capture, keyword-triggered DM funnels or DM broadcasts on Instagram. Or if your budget is under roughly $200 per month or you are a solo creator paying per seat. Or if you need Instagram story reply, story mention, live comment or follow triggers.

Which one to choose

You sell through DMs. Pick SendPulse. It is the only tool here under $25 a month whose own pages confirm both a CRM and payment buttons in the chat.

You only need comment-to-DM. Start with Chatfuel’s free plan. Meta Business Suite may be enough for a low-volume account.

Your account lives on stories and lives. ManyChat is the only tool here that documents story-reply, live-comment and follow-to-DM triggers together, with the last one still in beta.

A support team answers several channels. respond.io is built for that, and priced for it.

You are an agency. HighLevel’s flat price does not grow with contacts.

Questions people ask

Is ManyChat approved by Meta?

ManyChat says it is a Meta Business Partner and uses the official Instagram API. Five of the other tools here make the same claim on their own sites. HighLevel and NapoleonCat do not mention a partner status, and Meta Business Suite is Meta’s own product. We could not check Meta’s partner directory directly, because it requires a Facebook login. What Meta-approved means explains the badges.

Can I automate Instagram DMs for free?

Yes. Chatfuel’s free plan sends a DM to everyone who comments a keyword, with no contact limit stated. SendPulse’s free plan does the same for up to 500 subscribers. Meta Business Suite has a basic comment-to-message option at no cost. All eight free plans are compared on free Instagram DM automation tools.

How much does Instagram DM automation cost?

For 1,000 contacts, the paid tools on this page run from $19 to $199 a month on monthly billing. At 10,000 contacts the spread is wider, from $74 on SendPulse to $1,279 on respond.io. The cheapest Instagram DM automation tools page ranks the low end.
