How Instagram comment-to-DM works

Updated:

Comment-to-DM sends a private message to someone who comments on your post. Meta calls this a private reply. Its rules allow one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days, and a second message only after the person writes back.

What happens after someone comments

  1. Someone comments a keyword, such as “LINK”, on your post or Reel.
  2. Instagram notifies the automation tool that a new comment arrived.
  3. The tool checks the comment against your keywords.
  4. If it matches, the tool sends one private reply through Meta’s official API.
  5. The DM lands in the person’s inbox if they follow you, or in their message requests if they do not. Either way it shows a link to the post they commented on.
  6. If the person answers the DM, a 24-hour window opens and the tool can continue the conversation.

Meta’s private replies documentation (opens in a new tab) describes each of these rules, including where the message lands.

Why you only get one message

Meta allows “only one message” per comment. Follow-up messages can only go out if the person responds, and then only within 24 hours of their response.

This shapes how you write the first DM. It has to carry everything the person asked for, whether that is a link or a code. Most tools add buttons, which Meta calls quick replies, so a tap counts as a response and opens the window for a second message. Meta allows up to 13 quick-reply buttons per message.

Where it works

Private replies work on comments almost anywhere you publish: under posts and Reels, on stories, during live videos and on ad posts. On live video, the reply has to go out while the broadcast is still running.

Your account must be a professional account, either business or creator, and it must be public. Meta’s webhooks setup page (opens in a new tab) states that private accounts do not receive comment notifications, so automation cannot see the comments at all.

The hourly limit

Meta caps private replies at 750 per hour for each Instagram account, on posts and Reels. A giveaway that draws thousands of comments in an hour will hit that cap, and good tools queue the extra replies instead of dropping them. On live video the limit is much higher, at 100 replies per second.

Public replies

Most tools also reply under the comment in public, for example “Check your DMs”. That is an ordinary comment reply, separate from the private message. It shows other followers that the offer is real, and varied wording keeps it from looking like spam.

Why some DMs never arrive

  • The account is private. Meta sends no comment notifications for private accounts.
  • The comment is older than 7 days. A tool that was switched on late cannot answer old comments.
  • The live broadcast ended. Replies to live comments only work during the broadcast.
  • The hourly cap was reached. Replies beyond 750 an hour wait or fail, depending on the tool.
  • The keyword did not match. Some tools match exact words only, so “links” may not trigger “LINK”.

Questions people ask

Is comment-to-DM allowed on Instagram?

Yes, when the tool uses Meta’s official API. Meta built private replies for exactly this use, with one reply per comment within 7 days.

Why did my automated DM go to message requests?

Instagram puts the private reply in the inbox of people who follow you and in message requests for everyone else. Asking people to follow you before the link arrives, which some tools call a follow gate, avoids this.

Can I send more than one DM after a comment?

Only after the person replies. Their reply, or a tap on a button in your first message, opens a 24-hour window for more messages.
