How to set up Instagram comment-to-DM automation
Updated:
To set up comment-to-DM, you connect a professional Instagram account to an automation tool, pick a post and a keyword, and write the one DM Meta allows per comment. The steps below work in any tool that uses Meta’s official API. The menus have different names, but the logic is the same everywhere.
Before you start
- Use a professional account. Business and creator accounts both work. Personal accounts do not.
- Keep the account public. Meta sends no comment notifications for private accounts, so nothing will trigger.
- Allow access to messages if your tool asks. Tools that connect through Facebook need this setting: Instagram Settings, Messages and story replies, Message controls, Connected tools, Allow access to messages.
- Pick a tool. If you have not chosen one, the free tools and comment-to-DM apps pages compare the options.
Set it up
- Connect Instagram through Meta’s login screen. A tool that uses the official API opens a Meta window to connect your account. Never type your Instagram password into a tool’s own form.
- Choose where it runs. Pick one post or Reel, or let the rule run on every new post. Some tools also cover stories, live video and ads.
- Choose the keyword. Use a word people would not write by accident, such as “GUIDE” instead of “yes”. Add common variants if your tool matches exact words only.
- Write the DM. Meta allows one message per comment, so put the link or code in it. Add a button, such as “Send me the link”, so a tap opens a 24-hour window for a second message.
- Add a public reply. Reply under the comment with something like “Sent, check your DMs”. Use several wordings if your tool rotates them.
- Plan the follow-up. Decide what happens when someone taps or answers: a second message with the link, a question to collect an email, or a hand-over to a person.
- Test with a second account. Comment the keyword from another account, check that the DM arrives, and check where it lands.
- Tell people the keyword. Put it in the caption and on the video itself: “Comment GUIDE and I will send you the link.”
Writing the one message
The first DM is the only one you can send until the person responds, so it has to work on its own. Open with what they asked for and keep it short. Put the link or code near the top.
If you need more from them, such as an email, ask in the first message and make the answer a button. A tap counts as a response and opens the window for the next message.
When it does not work
- Nothing arrives. Check that the account is public and that the comment is less than 7 days old. Replies to live comments only work during the broadcast.
- The DM lands in message requests. Instagram does this for people who do not follow you. A follow gate, offered by some tools, asks people to follow first.
- Some comments get no reply. Meta allows 750 private replies per hour for each account. During a big giveaway, check whether your tool queues the extra replies.
- The keyword does not trigger. Your tool may match exact words. Add variants with capitals, plurals and common typos.
Next steps
Once comment-to-DM works, the same flow can sell. The guide on selling in Instagram DMs covers payment buttons and links in the chat.
