Instagram DM automation in 2026: what changed this year

Updated:

Three changes shaped Instagram DM automation over the past year. Meta’s own AI agent reached Instagram, Meta moved shop checkout back to sellers’ websites, and the biggest automation tool changed how it charges. Smaller API changes added new triggers and removed others.

Meta’s AI agent reached Instagram

Meta’s business AI grew fast in 2026. In its April earnings call Meta said these AIs handled about 10 million conversations a week (opens in a new tab), and that they were free for most businesses.

In June 2026 Meta announced its Business Agent (opens in a new tab). It answers questions about a business and books appointments, and Meta extended it to Instagram. It can also recommend products from a catalog. Getting started is free, with paid subscriptions to follow.

In September 2026 Meta launched Meta One plans (opens in a new tab), from $14.99 to $499 a month per profile, which include Business Agent capacity. The announcement describes agent replies on WhatsApp Business, and we could not confirm whether the plans cover Instagram DMs.

For automation tools, this means competition from the platform itself. A business that only needs answers to common questions may not need a third-party tool once Meta’s agent is available in its country.

Shop checkout moved back to websites

In 2023 Meta pushed Shops toward checkout on Facebook and Instagram. In 2025 it reversed course. Meta’s help center (opens in a new tab) states that since September 2025, Shops use website checkout and Meta no longer shows order status for new orders.

That made payment buttons in DMs, offered by tools such as SendPulse and ManyChat, the main way to sell inside a conversation. The guide to selling in DMs covers how they work.

API changes that affect automation

Meta’s Instagram Platform changelog (opens in a new tab) lists these changes:

Date Change
September 2025 Webhook for edited messages
December 2025 Story replies show the link sticker that was tapped, so tools can trigger different flows from it
December 2025 PDF attachments in messages
April 2026 Three message tags stop working on Instagram: confirmed event, account and post-purchase updates
May 2026 Sending several images in one message leaves beta
September 2026 Replies to a specific message in a conversation
October 2026 Quick-reply buttons that filled in a phone number or email are disabled

Meta’s documentation now also states a limit of 750 private replies per hour per account on post and Reel comments. We could not confirm when that limit took effect.

Automation tools added AI replies

ManyChat added AI Replies for Instagram in October 2025, still marked as beta in its help center. SendPulse added new AI agent models in September and October 2026, and it runs an MCP server that lets AI assistants manage chatbots and campaigns.

Smaller tools took a different route. InstantDM’s AI agent runs on the customer’s own OpenAI or Claude key, and SetSmart prices by AI message. The AI agents comparison covers the differences.

Follow-to-DM arrived, with limits

In October 2025 ManyChat launched Follow to DM, which sends a message when someone follows the account. It is still in beta, and Meta decides which accounts are eligible. ManyChat’s help center says Meta allows one such message per person per week, and that accounts with fewer than 1,000 followers are likely to be ineligible.

ManyChat changed how it charges

On 2 March 2026, ManyChat moved to billing by active contacts, meaning people who interacted with the account that month. Plans now include from 25 to 25,000 active contacts, with overage above that. Older accounts are being moved over country by country.

For accounts with large but quiet audiences, this lowers the bill. For accounts with many active contacts, it can raise it. The pricing comparison shows the effect at 1,000 and 10,000 contacts.

What this means for you

  • Check whether Meta’s free agent covers your needs before paying for AI replies elsewhere.
  • Plan DM sales around payment links, since checkout inside Instagram is gone for most sellers.
  • Ask for contact details in text, now that phone and email quick replies are disabled.
  • Recheck your bill if you use ManyChat, because active-contact pricing changes the cost of both big and small accounts.
