How to sell in Instagram DMs

Most sellers cannot take payment natively inside Instagram in 2026, so DM sales run on payment buttons. The buyer taps a button in the chat and pays on the payment provider’s page, and the automation tool confirms the order back in the DM. Why there is no Instagram checkout

Meta tried native payments. In July 2022 it launched payments in chat (opens in a new tab) for US Instagram businesses, paid through Meta Pay. We found no 2025 or 2026 Meta page saying whether it still works.

Shops moved the other way. Meta’s help center (opens in a new tab) states that since September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram use website checkout. Meta no longer shows order status for new orders either. Selling in DMs now means sending people to a payment page from the chat.

How a DM sale works

1. Someone comments a keyword, or messages you, about a product.
2. The tool sends a DM with the product and a payment button.
3. The buyer taps the button and pays on the provider’s page, such as Stripe or PayPal.
4. The tool receives the payment and sends an order confirmation in the DM.
5. If the buyer has not paid, the tool sends one reminder while the 24-hour messaging window is still open.

The first DM after a comment is the only one Meta allows until the person responds. Put the product and the button in that message, not a long introduction.

Set it up in SendPulse

1. Connect a payment provider in Account settings, under Accept payments. The list includes Stripe, PayPal, Mercado Pago and Klarna.
2. In your Instagram flow, add a message and click Add button, then choose Payment.
3. Set the button text, the provider, the amount and the product name. You can also create a CRM deal for every order.
4. Connect the Successful payment branch to a thank-you message with the order number.
5. Connect the No payment branch to a reminder, sent before the 24-hour window closes.

The buyer’s contact details, including email, come back from the payment provider and are saved to their contact record.

Set it up in ManyChat

ManyChat’s Buy Button (opens in a new tab) sits on a card or gallery message in an Instagram flow.

1. Connect Stripe or PayPal to ManyChat. One payment account can connect to one ManyChat account only.
2. Add a card or gallery block to your flow, then add a Buy Button.
3. Set the title, price, currency and item name, and choose any extra details to collect, such as email or a shipping address.
4. Add the steps that run after a successful purchase, such as an order confirmation.

ManyChat sets three limits worth knowing. Prices run from $0.50 to $100. With Stripe the buyer can only pay by card. ManyChat’s help center also states that Instagram DMs cannot be used to sell digital goods.

Other ways to get paid

SleekFlow lets agents send Stripe or Shopify payment links from its shared inbox, built from the customer’s selected items. HighLevel documents payment links inside its CRM. Many smaller DM apps simply send a link to your own online store.

Chatfuel is the exception. Its help center says payment processors cannot be connected, so payment has to happen on your own site.

Rules to keep in mind

• One message per comment. A private reply to a comment allows one message until the person answers.
• 24 hours to follow up. After the buyer responds, you have 24 hours to send reminders or confirmations.
• No promotions after the window. Meta bans promotional content in messages sent outside the 24-hour window.
• Ask for contact details in text. On 5 October 2026 Meta disabled the quick-reply buttons that filled in a phone number or email on Instagram. Ask people to type them, or collect them through the payment form.

Can you accept payments directly in Instagram DMs?
